SEO Tips To Improve Your Blog

by Gabe Arnold

Bloggers want their work read. Even as a pastime, getting ideas in front of audiences is the ultimate goal when operating a blog. For career bloggers, increasing visibility online is critical for professional survival. In trying to improve readership, applying SEO is the path to success.

SEO is constantly evolving, with search engines finding smarter ways to identify relevant, authoritative content. More advanced techniques need to be used to build that authority and priorities continually shift. Still, some concepts do have long-term staying power. Use these (sort of) advanced SEO tips to improve your blog and generate the following you deserve.

Research and Focus on Long-Tail Keywords

When implementing a content strategy, research is critical to finding in-demand keywords and even blog post ideas. Free and paid resources are available to discover the most valuable keywords. Tools from Google, Moz, and Ahrefs are just a few of the growing number of free resources to find verbiage.

Keyword options include general short-tail (e.g., “health tips”) and specific long-tail (e.g., “light exercises to lower cholesterol”) keywords. Focusing on the long-tail keywords should take priority. More users search with long-tail keywords, and because they are more specific, you generally face less competition. The best approach is to find a balance between primary long-tail keywords and secondary short-tail keywords.

Use Images Strategically

Adding images to break up text makes for a much more enjoyable user experience. Finding good images keeps readers engaged, which helps your average time on the page. That speaks to the other advantage of images — SEO.

Images give you a chance to add more keywords. Caption content can organically use long-tail keywords and the HTML alt tag can be your best friend. This image tag is used by search engines but is hidden from users. That means you can use clunky but valuable keywords that can’t be used organically (e.g. “B2B company USA”). In general, images are another great way to display your page’s relevance to search engines.

Guest Blogging

Backlinks from reputable websites relevant to your industry and topics are increasingly valuable for SEO. Having links hosted on another website happens naturally sometimes, but that usually only occurs if you already rank well.

To take control of backlinks, seek out guest blogging opportunities. Just Google “[my industry] + guest blogging” and you can find websites to write for. If accepted, you get to add your blog link to the author’s info, displaying your authority to search engines.
