Ask yourself the who, what, where, when, why and how guidelines of writing, and then answer them.

You will also need to source specific data in your articles so be sure you are looking at a reputable website for your information. Otherwise, your source won’t be worth squat, and, thus, your article will pale in the reader’s eyes.

While it’s good to have the skills mentioned, many of them can be learned. Some other important writing skills that you will need include:

  • Ability to write a catchy headline; readers look at two things – pictures and headlines. According to a study completed by Moz.com, 80 percent of readers don’t make it past the headline. Make sure your headlines draw the reader’s attention.
  • Writing a good opening; readers these days will first glance through the start of the article to see if it’s what they’re looking for. If you don’t write something that grabs them, they’ll find another to read.
  • Transitioning through the article; if you don’t transition the information in your article, it will seem like paragraph-long, bulleted facts rather than a flowing article.
  • Proper style; writing with the proper style for the piece that you are working on is important. If it’s a professional marketing piece and you write like you’re talking to your best friend, it won’t reach the consumer properly.

What can I expect to earn doing copywriting?

You’re probably wondering about the pay, right? If you work for a company, you, of course, can make a very good salary doing copywriting/content marketing. If you are looking to be an independent contractor, you can make anywhere from a reasonable living to a very comfortable living. It all depends on how much you want to put into it.

Copywriters can be retirees, stay at home parents and everything in between. Be honest with yourself and make sure you do your research before deciding what route you want to take with your copywriting career.
