Better Business Building: How to Create a Development Plan

by Gabe Arnold

If you want to create a development plan for your business, it’s important that you first understand exactly what goes into a development plan and what you need to keep in mind when you go to create one. A business development plan is essentially your business plan for survival and growth in the future. In today’s world, there are a lot of different things changing and nothing really remains the same for long. From advancement in the technology available to us to the change in what the customers want out of a business, you can always assume your business is going to have to adapt to change. With a development plan, your business is guided on how to move through these changes while still remaining at the top.

Company Evaluation

The first place that you’re going to need to start your development plan is with your company. It’s going to be tough to create a plan about your company if you don’t truly know everything there is to know about it. Even if you do, it’s important that you have it written down somewhere for you to reference. At this stage of the development plan, you need to create a solid understanding of who your company is, what your company is and where your company is positioned. All of these points can help serve as a foundation for developing a growth plan.

With this point, you should have defined your company by what type of business it is, what type of people it serves and how your business serves those people. Lastly, you should know where your company is positioned in the marketplace and how you are different than your competitors.

Industry Evaluation

As important as it is for you to understand your own company, it is equally, if not more, important for you to understand the industry that your company operates in. For this part of your development plan, you should pay close attention to the industry and marketplace to see if there are any trends that might play a large impact in the future and could change the industry. Take a close look at your competitors to see where they might be in the future and conduct customer surveys and other types of surveys in order to see where their preferences might lie in the future.

All of this information will help you figure out exactly where your company needs to be in terms of the products and services that it offers and will help you grow your operation and gain market shares.

Customer Analysis

Hopefully this is information that you already have or can easily obtain if you don’t. This is the part where you as a business need to become familiar with your target customers, or possibly even find more target customers in a different group. By meeting with your target customers and getting to know them on a more personal level, you can help discover some of the trends that are happening in the industry (as discussed above) and you can also learn about what the customers think of your current products, what expectations they have of the company and any needs that they might like you to address in the future. There are a lot of benefits to getting to know your target customers, but this can have a big impact in making sure you’re ready for the next trend to hit your industry.

Partnership Goals

One of the best ways to help sustain growth for your business is to establish partnerships when you can. You should not try to force a partnership if the fit isn’t right, but a partnership can really help you out. Try and research some different potential partners to make sure that they would be a good fit with you. Ideally, you want to partner with somebody who has a strong brand, a good advertising presence, a loyal customer base and other key business points to make sure that the partnership is mutually beneficial. Before you even begin to discuss a partnership with another business, make sure that they can realize the benefits that exist by partnering with your company.

Creating a development plan for your business is one of the more important things that you can can do and it should be something that is done early on in your business to help ensure that you place yourself on a path for success. A development plan helps make sure that your company is ready to adapt to any changes that your industry or customer base might face.
