Best Practices When Curating Content

If you aren’t already aware of what curating content is, it’s essentially the process of taking a massive amount of information on the internet and then taking the important parts and rearranging it to present it in a meaningful and organized way. Typically it is centered around a particular theme that would relate back to the audience that you are intending to reach. If you are curating content or you’re going to be doing so eventually, the following are some of the best practices that you should keep in mind whenever you curate content.

Keep a Mix of Curated and Original Content


This is somewhat similar to a point that is mentioned later on in this post, but it is different enough to make sure it gets it’s own point as well. While curating content is an important step in finding things to write about, you have to make sure that you are adding in some of your own original content at the same time. As a rule of thumb, you should probably make sure that you are adding in at least 40% of your own content when you write.

Always Credit Your Sources


It should really go without saying this, but if you’re going to curate your content from specific sources, it is incredibly important that you make sure you are citing your source. You don’t have to cite it like you would in academic paper, but if a lot of your content is pulled from one or two sources, there should be some sort of reference to those sources.

Call To Action


Whenever you curate content and you post a blog or some other type of media, the main goal is to get your audience to do something. Very few times you are going to be posting content just because you want to give your readers something to read. Most times, you are going to be curating content for the sole purpose of trying to get your audience to do something. At the end of each post, make sure you have a call to action to let the audience and readers know exactly what you want them to do after they finish reading your post.

Choose a Relevant Headline and Image


If you are curating your content from a specific source, then there is absolutely nothing wrong with changing the headline and the image. As a matter of fact, there’s a good chance that you’re going to want to change both of those features. Just because it’s already written doesn’t mean that it is written well. Spicing up the headline and the image can help drive readers to your content.

Add Your Own Insights


When you curate content, you are going to be taking the majority of your content from maybe one or two sources. When you do so, you’re probably going to get wrapped up in the content that they’ve written to the point where you don’t even add any of your own insights. If this sounds like you, don’t do that! Adding your own insights is an incredibly important thing for you to do, especially when it comes to curating content. Adding your own voice and insights will better help you connect back to your audience.

Spread Out Your Sources


As Matt Heinz talks about on his blog, it can be very tempting to curate content from the same great source over and over again because it makes your job a lot easier especially if the source is a really good one. However, you will find that you have a lot more success if you don’t use the same source over and over again, especially in the same short time frame. As Heinz says, “Spacing adds to the perceived comprehensiveness and reach/value of your overall curated boy of work.” So while you may have a really solid source, make sure you use it sparingly to get the most out of it.

Curate Content That Matters


It should come as no surprise to you when I say this, but the whole reason that you are curating content in the first place is so that you can take a certain amount of information and present it back to your audience. However, if you curate content that your audience isn’t going to care about, then you’ve just wasted your time. As Neal Schaffer put on his blog, you should start your content curation strategy by “finding what matters to your audience and developing sharing rules around that.”

As you can see, there are a lot of steps to content curation and it’s really important that you find the right type of content to curate or else you will not have as much success as you would hope for.
